AUBURN-OPELIKA MPO

Federal transportation legislation requires that urbanized areas with a population greater than 50,000 establish a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). In cooperation with the State of Alabama, the Auburn-Opelika MPO is responsible for carrying out the metropolitan transportation planning process for the City of Auburn, the City of Opelika and portions of Lee County.

The 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan Update Begins

Lee-Russell Council of Governments, on behalf of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), has initiated a study to update the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).  In order to receive federal and state funding for local transportation projects, the LRTP must be updated every five years to reflect changes in transportation needs.  The LRTP serves as a guide for efficient and equitable expenditure of transportation funding in the Auburn-Opelika area.

Socio-economic, employment and census data will be collected during the LRTP process to develop a clear view of transportation needs in the area.  Specific projects will be included in the LRTP based on the collected data and identified needs.  The LRTP directly impacts other planning documents, such as the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP), as projects must first be present in the LRTP before they may be placed in the TIP.

Public involvement in the development of the LRTP is essential.  Through the MPO’s Citizen Advisory Committee and public outreach events, the public has the opportunity share in the development of the LRTP.  All public comments will be documented, included in the LRTP appendix and considered as the LRTP process unfolds.
